Right noon (PT) Seattle-based e-commerce giant Amazon experienced an outage that lasted through most of the lunch hour. The outage was felt throughout the North American continent leaving both Canadian and United States customers without access to the online retailer. The outage cost the Seattle company anywhere between $2 million and $4 million depending on the what source you look at. So far there has been no cause given for this outage.
“We’re very sorry, but we’re having trouble doing what you just asked us to do. Please give us another chance–click the Back button on your browser and try your request again. Or start from the beginning on our homepage.” This was the message that everyone was seeing while they tried to get some shopping in during their lunch break.
There have been no groups come forward and take credit for bring the site down but that doesn't rule out some from of hacking. Of course human error, which was determined to be the cause of the Christmas eve outage, can't be ruled out as a possibility. Just what caused the “lunch crunch” probably won't be known for a day or two as Jeff Bezos and crew look into the matter.
The Amazon outage follows the short outage the web giant Google experienced on Friday. The cause of that outage caused a temporary lull in Internet traffic. Redmond-giant Microsoft also experienced as outage in their outlook e-mail service last week. Both of those outages are also unknown but the outlook outage did occur after a week of sporadic.
