On Dec 1 Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon.com, announced that the company plans to have the capability to deliver small packages to your doorstep via air drone. The cyber shopping giant is actively panning a delivery system that would allow small packages to be delivered in 30 minutes or less. The system even has a name already: Prime Air. It seems like a dream come true for tech geeks everywhere, right? Maybe not.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hasn’t approved that kind of use for our national air space yet. The chances of them doing so within the 5-year time frame Amazon envisions are slim at best. Drone flight above 65-feet is considered dangerous to manned air craft that frequent the urban and suburban populations centers these drones would be designed to serve.
Even with a collision avoidance system we don’t see this as being a safe option anytime in the near future.
But, Amazon still plans to go ahead with their plans to develop the service. Which leaves many of of us wondering if this is going to be a billion dollar bust, instead of the wave of the future.
