Amazon.com’s 2013 Breakthrough Novel Award competition has a new twist

The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Contest is Amazon.com’s siren’s call to aspiring authors around the world. Since 2008, the contest has plucked authors from an international pool of 10,000 writers. The prize consisted of $15,000 and a publishing contract with a mainstream publisher.

This year, however, Amazon.com has proclaimed its contest “bigger and better.” Amazon.com has removed big publishing from the mix, possibly due in part to their mutually contentious relationship. One Grand Prize winner of the 2013 Breakthrough Novel Award contest wins a book contract with the newly minted Amazon Publishing and pockets a $50,000 advance. Also new—four First Prize winners, who each receive $15,000 and a publishing deal as well. The change in the contest, according to Amazon.com, promises “a faster publishing time line, higher royalties, ability to launch the books in multiple formats (audio, print, ebook) and worldwide distribution.”
