Amazon shoppers and social media enthusiasts were treated to a surprise today, Monday, May 5, as the shopping giant released their newest feature, Amazon Cart, which will allow users to add Amazon items to their virtual shopping cart without ever having to leave Twitter.
The new feature works like this: Sync your Amazon account to Twitter via the Amazon website, and when you see a product offered on Amazon, simply reply to the tweet with the hashtag #AmazonCart and the product will be waiting in your Amazon shopping cart whenever you sign on. An idea, according to the new marketing video released by Amazon, that aims to eliminate having to search for an item you saw on Twitter earlier but did not have time to buy.
While some skeptics seem confused as to why someone would want to add an item to their shopping cart via Twitter, or why a user would not just simply click on the link in the tweet, marketers are heralding the new app as an incentive for third-party businesses to utilize Amazon in their social media marketing and sales; which would be a big bonus for Amazon, but maybe not so much for the consumer.
However, most agree that having the ability to add an interesting item to their Amazon shopping cart via a simple reply on Twitter is a bonus for the consumer in online shopping. As many who use the social media site often do so at work and may not have time to purchase the item they see, and with the "come and go" pace of tweets, might have trouble finding it later.
Despite whether this idea will take off or not, it is one of the first features from a major company that uses social media for direct purchasing, not just as a platform for sales. An idea, that if it becomes popular, could revolutionize how big brands use social media and offer more concrete empirical evidence on the ongoing debate of "ROI" (Return on Investment) in social media.
