Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award opens Jan. 14, 2013

The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award will begin accepting entries on Jan. 14, 2013. Writers may enter in one of five genre categories: General Fiction, Romance, Mystery/Thriller, Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror, or Young Adult Fiction. One Grand Prize winner will receive a publishing contract with an advance of $50,000. Four First Prize winners will receive a publishing contract with a $15,000 advance. There is no fee to enter the contest.

Unlike past years, in which Penguin Group (USA) was the publishing sponsor for the contest, this year’s official publishing sponsor is Amazon Publishing. According to Amazon, this will lead to a “faster publishing timeline, higher royalties, ability to launch the books in multiple formats (print, audio, ebook) and worldwide distribution.”

Writers wishing to enter the contest must prepare a pitch and a manuscript of 50,000-150,000 words. The contest will close once 10,000 entries have been received or on Jan. 27, 2013, whichever comes first. The winner will be announced in June.
