Eliminated “The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business” player Ron Hsu said going down the wrong street during a Road Block in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India threw him for a loop and cost he and his partner, daughter Christina, precious time.
In an email received Tuesday, Ron explained what happened during the Road Block, which was featured on Sunday’s episode:
“After receiving unlucky directions that led me down a street with no sadhus, I went down to the River Ganges and found one sadhu. Overthinking that holy men usually meditate on the banks of holy River Ganges, the toughest part was traversing from one end of the Ganges River to the other end and not finding another sadhus. Afterwards, I went back to the starting point to find a busier street where the sadhus were blended into the scene. The tough part was starting off on the wrong street which threw me for a loop and cost us time.”
The race to the leg’s pit stop came down to Ron and Christina versus Kent and Vyxsin, and although it appeared Kent and Vyxsin would be eliminated due to taxi problems, Ron and Christina were the team that arrived last (full episode recap).
In the players’ email, they said they would absolutely run “The Amazing Race” again if given the opportunity, writing they love the adventures, the new cultures and the new people they meet while racing.
More from my interview with Ron and Christina Hsu:
Why did you decide to run the race again?
Ron: “We had a wonderful experience racing in Season 12, and I wanted to race with Christina before she got married the following year.”
Christina: “It's a second in a lifetime chance to travel with my dad, who is the most fun and adventurous travel partner I know. How could we give up the opportunity?”
Christina, Vyxsin told viewers she was worried when Jet and Cord showed up at the Road Block. Were you worried when they showed up?
Christina: “My dad and I never discounted the cowboys even though they were on a later flight. We watched their season and know they work best when they are overcoming a big deficit. When they showed up, although it added some pressure, I knew worrying wouldn't help the situation. It was tough when the cowboys finished before us, but my dad didn't come back too long afterward. Although we knew we were not as quick as the cowboys and would have a hard time not just catching them, but passing them, we were determined to never give up. You just never know what is going to happen in the Race.”
You both seemed confident the water taxi was the best way to the pit stop. Any regrets about that decision? Any idea how far behind Kent and Vyxsin you were?
Christina: “We were told the fastest way to Ramanagar Fort was via water taxi, so we took our chances and took the water taxi. That's the information we knew to be right at the time, so we don't have regrets following that information. It's hard to tell how far behind we were. A second on the Race when you're at the bottom of the pack feels like an eternity, but we were told later that we were not that far behind Kent and Vyxsin.”
Do either of you have a favorite moment from this race?
Christina: “Seeing my dad ride a Yak against the backdrop of Jade Dragon Mountain in China was amazing. It was one of those moments where I could really take it in and reflect ‘Wow I'm with my dad in China, and he is riding a yak on Jade Dragon Mountain. How amazing.’”
Ron: “I enjoyed taking quality time out of the Race with Christina and visiting the Sydney opera house, dancing with the Naxi villagers in Lijiang, and eating a delicious meal in India together. These are simple moments that I'll never forget.”
How did this race differ from your first time running "The Amazing Race"?
Ron: “This second round of racing was more physically grueling with the super legs and hard-to-find pit stops.”
