While the e reader offers a number of conveniences, there is still something to be said for visiting a local bookstore. Sadly, many independent bookstores are being forced to close or relocate due to declining sales. The list below is comprised of a number of wonderful independent bookstores in the United States.

Quimby's in Chicago, Illinois

Located in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, Quimby’s is known for their large collection or rare books and graphic novels. This small, independent bookstore is a bit on the alternative side, both in decor and selection, and it features a collection of self-published books by Chicago authors.

Subterranean Books in St. Louis, Missouri

Subterranean Books is located in the Delmar Loop area of St. Louis. This cozy bookstore has been a staple in the area since it opened in 2000. The staff is friendly and helpful and the store carries a variety of books from all genres, including a number of locally published authors.

Village Books in Bellingham, Washington

Located in Fairhaven, Village Books is one of the larger independent bookstores in the area. Carrying a wonderful selection of new and used books, this 3 story bookstore also has a lovey café and a number of little areas to relax and read.

Maple Street Books in New Orleans, Louisiana

Known for carrying both new and rare books, Maple Street Books will celebrate their 50th anniversary in September of this year. Known for their impressive selection of books form New Orleans based authors; the store also carries a variety of rare books.

Seattle Mystery in Seattle, Washington

Perfect for mystery lovers, Seattle Mystery Bookshop is a quaint little store that carries a variety of mystery books by both well-known and local authors. Although they only carry mystery books, they can order any book for customers.
