Amazing book on the Beatles' home town goes paperback

David Bedford's "Liddypool: Birthplace of the Beatles," which we reviewed previously, is one of the best books about the city and the Beatles that's out there. Its comprehensiveness and detail make it a must-have for any Beatle fan who wants to know more about the city that the Beatles call their hometown.

The book has just come out in paperback and the new version has a few additions. The song section has been expanded. The new entries include comments on Ringo Starr's "The Other Side of Liverpool" and Paul McCartney's "That Was Me." Bedford also added a photo of the essay Paul McCartney wrote at age 11 that won him a prize.

The paperback version also includes a guide map to the city that supplements the book. The map features three Beatles-themed walking tours and 50 locations of Beatle sites.

In addition to the book, there are also related CD and DVDs available through the book's website. The CD features 20 tracks that Bedford says inspired the Beatles, including Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock," Lonnie Donnegan's "Rock Island Line," the Vipers Skiffle Group's "Maggie May" (the "Let It Be" album song), Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes' "Twist and Shout" and Johnny and the Hurricane's "Red River Rock."

The 53-minute DVD documentary features Bedford telling the story of where the Beatles were born, where they grew up and how they started on their road to fame. At the moment, it's only available in the European PAL TV standard and not the American NTSC. He told us, however, an American version is in the works.
