Amethyst is the birthstone associated with the month of February. This lovely lavender-hued gem comes in a wide range of purple tones, from pale rose to a deep dark purple. It is a variety of quartz, which is the most abundant mineral in the earth's crust, and can be found in very large crystal formations or very very tiny ones. The latter state is known as 'Drusy', and is a wonderful way for jewelry designers to show off the gem's natural beauty.
