Amazing 1200 mile reunion for dog and owner

Merriam, KS - Grizz, a one year-old Lab/Pit mix, will be reunited with his owner thanks to some amazing people from the Heartland SPCA.

Last Wednesday, Grizz found himself at the Merriam shelter - a facility located a jaw-dropping 1200 miles from Grizz's home in Butte, Montana.

Grizz's incredible journey began when he somehow escaped from his yard in Butte.

A family making a cross-country trek from Washington to Texas found Grizz and assumed that he was a stray. They decided to take the wayward dog with them on their travels.

Along the way, they decided that they weren't going to keep Grizz, but knew that he should go to a shelter - enter the Heartland SPCA.

Fortunately, Grizz had a microchip.

Unfortunately, the chip was not registered.

The Heartland SPCA staff was undeterred by the roadblock. Rather than writing off Grizz as a dog without an owner and moving on, they did some digging and eventually made contact with the shelter who originally implanted Grizz's chip.

Thankfully, there was current contact information on file.

But the amazing efforts of this facility did not stop there.

One of the shelter's volunteers, Kathi Thies, is making an incredible trek on behalf of Grizz. Thies is driving 600 miles to Cheyenne, WY to meet up with Grizz's guardian.

Six hundred miles...an amazing, generous, incredible act of kindness.

Imagine how this story might have played out if Grizz did not have a microchip...or if this shelter did not go the extra mile to find this lost dog's owner.

Thankfully, those scenarios do not have to be considered because fate led Grizz right to the people who were best equipped to lend him the help that he needed to be reunited with his guardian.

Please stop by the Heartland SPCA Facebook page and tell them thank you for going through so much effort to help this dog.
