Late Friday in Amarillo, September 27, a man was struck by a vehicle, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. The unidentified man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
It was shortly before 11 p.m. when the call came in about an accident. Emergency personnel were immediately sent out to Leroy Way, [7000 block].
Department of Public Safety trooper Chris Ray said that horse riders were milling around in the street, when a vehicle struck one of the riders and his horse. None of the riders or their horses was outfitted with reflective gear and the street was quite dark. The driver had little chance to see the riders before he struck one of them.
Crews had begun investigating the scene while others were cleaning up. It was then that witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot, surmising that a horse was put down. Ray was unable to confirm that a horse was destroyed but agreed that was probably the case.
Ray stated that alcohol was not an issue for the car’s driver. However, alcohol figured into the rider’s condition.
Investigation into the accident continues.
