Amandla Stenberg talks 'The Hunger Games,' meeting Suzanne Collins & more

Publisher's Weekly has a new interview with The Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg, who plays the young but courageous character Rue, a fan favorite.

Stenberg tells PW that she was a fan long before getting involved in the movie.

"I think it took me about two nights to finish [the book]," Stenberg said. "I couldn’t put it down, and my nose was in the book the whole time. It’s such a page turner, and Suzanne Collins’s writing is so vivid. Everyone was wondering what I was reading. After I finished it, my dad took it, and then my mom."

Stenberg admits she's read the book at least five times now -- four of those before she landed the coveted role of Rue in The Hunger Games movie.

Stenberg also said one of the highlights from shooting the movie was getting to meet Collins on set. "She was there for two days in the middle of shooting. It was so amazing to meet her – the creator of all this," Stenberg said. "We were doing a very traumatic scene, and I was kind of bawling my eyes out. I wasn’t quite sure if this was how Suzanne Collins imagined the scene. And so I talked to her, and she told me just that Rue was trying to be very strong for Katniss. She wanted Katniss to go on, so she tried to be very brave for Katniss. That was very helpful."

Of course, The Hunger Games isn't the only book Stenberg is a fan of. She tells PW that she's been devouring plenty of reads lately, among them Cleopatra's Moon by Vicky Alvear Shecter, The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, and James Dashner's Maze Runners series. (Up next on her to-read list? Legend by Marie Lu.)
