CBS is at the point where it needs to consider some of the effects of its policies. In particular, policies pertaining to the show Big Brother. Last season one of the houseguests was evicted for fighting with another houseguest. It would seem that fighting on the show is completely unacceptable to the CBS producers. However, this season, while no one is fist-fighting, subscribers to the 24-hour live feed via the Internet have been privileged to watch houseguests having live sex on camera. Granted, they are under covers and the cameras are on night vision, but Amanda Zuckerman and McCrae Olson have left little to the imagination.
Over the seasons the term “showmance” has come to define houseguests who have developed some kind of relationship with each other. While on the surface this is innocuous and perhaps charming, people who meet on the show then find that they have a new boyfriend or girlfriend as a result. However, the rest of us across the country don't particularly want to watch their bedroom habits.
The boyfriend/girlfriend dynamic is more the topic of gossip columnists, however. What this article points to is more important and more of a dynamic that reflects spiritual and moral themes. Amanda Zuckerman has used her on-show boyfriend, McCrae, to help do her dirty work in bullying other houseguests into doing her bidding. Anyone that Amanda has considered to be an enemy has become her target and she has succeeded in getting them out of the house. There may be a fine line between playing the game with a ruthless bent and simply breaking CBS’s rules to make others kowtow out of fear of retribution.
The jig may soon be up for Amanda Zuckerman. An online frenzy has taken place to do whatever is possible to remove her from the house as well as the show. The follow up to that is gaining momentum as well, which is to remove the producer with whom Amanda Zuckerman is presumably friends, Allison Grodner. Petitions have been started for both efforts, but Amanda’s has suddenly taken on a life of its own. Fans have referred back to the Eligibility Requirements for evidence that Amanda has broken the rules and should be not only evicted from the house, but removed completely from the house and jury.
For example, rule #9 states, “You must be in excellent physical and mental health.” Amanda has stated several times that she takes Adderall (used to treat ADHD) and Xanex (used to treat anxiety disorders). Amanda’s behavior on the show has shown, however, that she exhibits the behavior of a sociopath or at the least someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. She is clearly not in excellent mental health.
One of the keys to the furor and push to remove Amanda came when Amanda urged Andy to read her a story when he was reading from the Big Brother house rules. This seems to have prompted fans to dig up the Eligibility Requirements and other rules that can be found online, which in turn has provided the needed ammunition to make a case for Amanda’s dismissal.
The following write up is being circulated around Facebook as a plea for people to sign the petition:
Please sign this petition to get AMANDA ZUCKERMAN out of the Big Brother house. She has consistently threatened bodily harm to other contestants, bullied people, engaged in heinous racial slurs, speaks about slitting a contestant's throat and raping their dead body (Jessie), stole then broke personal property of a fellow contestant (Elissa's bracelet and Elissa's sign with her name on it from a POV competition). Amanda has consistently broken BB rules and should be immediately expelled from the show but since it is up to the discretion of the producer (we all know how she is friend's with Allison Grodner the producer) she is receiving preferential treatment. I implore those who have live feeds please capture and post on YouTube evidence of Amanda breaking the rules so we can show this evidence to CBS to hopefully force the producers of Big Brother to take action. Please post the links on the CBS and Big Brother Facebook pages.
The petition at the time of this writing has over 9,000 supporters, up 7.500 or so since Monday. This may actually be having a positive effect. According to Facebook member Stephen Fox, Amanda has made a deal with CBS to “save face” until the live show Thursday, at which point she will be leaving. His post is no longer available online, however a screen shot of it is attached to this article.
Amanda Zuckerman finally leaving Season 15 of Big Brother will not only save face for her, but for CBS as well. The network has reached new lows in programming by allowing 24/7 access to immoral, near-pornographic, sociopathic, bullying behavior. It is one thing for viewers to watch a steamy love scene performed by actors and edited for television. It is entirely another issue to air actual sex with all the associated, disgusting slurping sounds. Each houseguest wears a microphone, also 24/7, so no contestant has any expectation for privacy.
The point of all this from a spiritual standpoint is the dynamic at play that has allowed Amanda Zuckerman to continue as far as she has in the Big Brother contest. Groups, including church boards, are subject to the same dynamics. A person with sociopathic tendencies can schmooze and manipulate their way into leadership and wreak absolute havoc on the otherwise well-intentioned efforts of the whole. Entire churches have been rent asunder by one such person taking control from a leadership standpoint and ousting a pastor and other members who won’t toe the line and follow marching orders. Amanda has told specific lies to specific people and somehow remembered who she told what so that without all the pieces of the whole, no one suspected for weeks that she had undermined them while on the surface appearing to be a friend and supporter. So it is with a destructive person in the midst of a spiritual organization. While people in a church are not competing for a half million dollars, they are even more susceptible due to an intrinsic, unspoken ethic that everyone participating should be trustworthy and participating with a shared sense of values. With apparently no reason to have a guard up, people are easily drawn into the snares of someone like Amanda who comes into the organization for selfish purposes at odds with those of the rest of the group.
While this season of Big Brother has gotten far out of control and fans have been jumping ship like rats, CBS may be making steps toward redemption. Simply ridding themselves of the Amanda Zuckerman menace would make great headway in this direction. This is what any group, be they friends, workplace, church, or other organization, has to do in order to regain balance and return to some sense of normalcy. To struggle with guilt or other apprehension over extricating the perpetrator is to fall into their web of manipulation. This behavior is difficult to nail down without something like the 24/7 access that America has had into Amanda’s evil ways. Having a person like this in your midst in every day life makes it nearly impossible to have clear cut evidence as to why they should be extricated. Pray. Learn to follow your gut and the leading of Spirit and get this kind of person out of your life in any way morally and ethically possible. In the end, you will be glad you did. So it will be with CBS.
