As most of you reading this column are keenly aware, AMA Pro Racing is the premier professional motorcycle racing organization in North America, operating a full schedule of events and championships for a variety of motorcycle disciplines. They also partner with international racing series to help coordinate, publicize, and broadcast motorcycle racing events all over the globe. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on Saturday, Jan 11, the organization, in partnership with Cycle World and RPM Racing, will deliver exclusive live streaming video coverage of the 2014 Superprestigio Dirt Track from the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain,
The Superprestigio was created in 1979 by magazine publisher Jaime Alguersuari and has been held 15 times at pavement venues. Three future American world champions-John Kocinski, Kenny Roberts Jr., and Colin Edwards-made their European debuts at the Superprestigio. Other Americans who have competed include Randy Mamola, Rich Oliver, and Chris D'Alusio, and at RPM-organized dirt-track races, Jay Springsteen and Steve Morehead. A truly international affair, this year's event will also feature riders from England, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
Revived by 2013 MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez, the Superprestigio brings together top road racing and off-road stars for an exciting evening of competition using an American-style flat-track format that many riders now use as a training method. Because an international flat-track race would be incomplete without American riders, Marquez invited reigning AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Champion Brad "The Bullet" Baker to participate in this unique event. Fellow Americans Kenny Noyes and Merle Scherb will also compete, and AMA Pro Flat Track flagman Kevin Clark will be on hand to entertain the crowd. This race will also serve as a warm-up event for the 2014 AMA Pro Racing season, which begins on March 13 - 15, 2014 at the legendary Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The AMA Pro SuperBike, GoPro Daytona SportBike and AMA Pro SuperSport divisions will contest doubleheaders at each round in 2014, while the Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Series will participate in one race final per weekend.
The 2014 AMA Pro Road Racing schedule is as follows:
- March 13 - 15 - Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, Fla.
- May 30 - June 1 - Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wis.
- June 21 - 22 - Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, Ala.*
- July 19 - 20 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, Ohio*
- September 13 - 14 - New Jersey Motorsports Park, Millville, N.J.*
* - These events will feature the two-day event schedule
A sixth event may be added to the 2014 AMA Pro Road Racing schedule in the coming weeks. Additional details will be released upon confirmation of the event.
Of course, road racing is not the only thing the AMA sanctions. They also participate in off road racing, such as Motocross, which makes up a large portion of their viewership and fanbase. MX Sports Pro Racing manages and produces the world's most prestigious professional motocross series - the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing.
"For the past five years, AMA Pro Racing has worked and been associated with MX Sports Pro Racing, and has been impressed by their professionalism and skill in significantly elevating the sport of professional motocross racing," said David Atlas, Managing Board Member of AMA Pro Racing. "In electing to renew and extend the contract between MX Sports Pro Racing and the Daytona Motorsports Group, we have come to admire the very effective and growing professional motocross strength and impact which MX Sports Pro Racing has achieved with their key constituents, the athletes, teams, the National Promoters Group, Alli Sports and Lucas Oil Products."
The 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will kick off Saturday, May 24 in San Bernardino, Calif. with the return of the Glen Helen National.
