Suffolk County police are searching for an elderly Islip man who went missing from his home on Wednesday and has not returned, according to a state missing persons alert issued Aug. 29.
Investigators said the man, 81-year-old Thomas Kinane, left his home on Spur Drive South in Islip around 3 p.m. on Aug. 28. He reportedly took his 2000 black Mercury Marquis from the home and never returned. The vehicle’s license plate number is DZW-8499.
State authorities said Kinane was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and is now being considered a “missing venerable adult.”
In a Silver Alert advisory, Suffolk Police noted that Kinane suffers from memory loss and may lose track of time.
Kinane is described as a white male, 6-foot-2, and weighs approximately 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a baseball cap, button down shirt and black jeans.
Anyone with information on Kinane’s whereabouts is urged to call Third Squad detectives at 631-854-8352.
The Silver Alert program is a relatively new program in Suffolk County and allows local law enforcement agencies to share information with media outlets about individuals with special needs who have been reported missing.
UPDATE [Aug. 30, 2013 10:35 a.m.]: Suffolk County police say Thomas Kinane has been located. He is reported as being safe and unharmed. No further information was immediately available.
