The 39-year-old actress, who was born in Washington, D.C., will embark on a new acting journey after “How I Met Your Mother” ends its nine-year run at the end of March.
If her past roles are anything to go by, Hannigan’s new character on “More Time with Family,” Cindy Rizzo, will be just as loveable and memorable.
Hannigan has made a career out of playing unassuming, redheaded vixens in several long-running TV and movie franchises, including the hit CBS show “How I Met Your Mother.”
Viewers will be glued to their screens to watch how the final season ends, and the entertaining lead characters, including Lily, will be sorely missed when it’s all over.
Lily and her on-screen husband Marshall Eriksen, played by Jason Segel, are one of the most adored TV couples due to their love for each other even during their toughest moments.
Hannigan proved that her love for Segel extends off-screen as well, as she explained how much of a “great guy” he is while becoming emotional on TV.
Her role as Lily has become a major part of her thriving career, but her first taste of success was playing Willow Rosenberg on the hit TV show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
Her character started out as Buffy’s innocent and cute friend, but she developed into a powerful witch.
She met her now-husband Alexis Denisof on the set of the show when he played a Watcher named Wesley.
He also appeared in nine episodes of “How I Met Your Mother” and is, along with Hannigan, a godparent to “Buffy” creator Joss Whedon’s son.
Hannigan also played the dorky but kinky Michelle Flaherty in the first three “American Pie” films, and the 2012 sequel “American Reunion.”
Michelle was another seemingly innocent character, until viewers found out she was really into kinky sex, with her fetish being musical instruments as sex toys.
The iconic quote “this one time, at band camp…” became a classic line in the comedy film franchise due to the outrageous stories about Michelle’s sexual escapades.
Hannigan’s next project as a co-star on “More Time with Family” is produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
“How I Met Your Mother” airs on CBS on Mondays at 8 p.m. The final episode airs March 31.
