Drama in Denver, as Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KOs) tips the scale for his bout with Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KOs) one pound over weight. The event is being presented by Top Rank, and will be televised on HBO Championship Boxing tomorrow night.
Alvarado, the current WBO junior welterweight champion, is defending the title for a second time against Ruslan Provodnikov.
At today's official weigh-in, Alvarado stepped on the scale at 141 lbs., one pound over. Provodnikov weighed in at a chiseled 139.8 lbs., looking to be in great shape.
The hometown favorite was given two hours to lose the one pound, or risk giving up his belt and a portion of his purse. In his absence, security and members of Provodnikov's team watched over the scale, insuring no tampering would happen.
Alvarado used most of the time allowed, and returned to the scale with a weight of 139.8 lbs., allowing the bout to remain in tact.
