Alternatives to owning a car

We're not talking bikes, subways or other forms of transportation here. We're talking leasing or renting a car, much the same as you'd do with a house or apartment. Let's explore these two options and see what possibilities they open up.

Renting - Renting is often a better option if you're on vacation or otherwise visiting another city or country, whether for tourism or business. Renting let's you avoid worrying about the general upkeep of a car, plus having to find a place to store it when not in use. You do have to pay for gas, plus it's often a wise investment to get car insurance in case anything happens during your trip. The safe your driving record, the less you'll have to worry about that though. For those living in big cities like New York City, there are also short-term rental options where you can rent cars by the day or even by the hour for just a few bucks. Handy when running errands or visiting a friend out of town.

Leasing - Leasing a car could be considered like a long-term rental in some ways. You have the car for an extended period and can basically treat it like you own it. You can get loans to lease a car, which is essentially providing you the money to use the car for long-term, versus purchasing it long term. It's a very situational need, and we'll talk more about it in future articles. There is wisdom in making sure you take good care of the car while it's being leased, mainly because you'll have to return it eventually, and you might have fees involved for damages, etc.
