A few years back, I learned that a friend's daughter had been diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. My past research on alternative therapy and complimentary medicine had shown me that the chemotherapy generally prescribed for Leukemia treatment actually weakens the immune system. Immediately, I began researching alternative therapy and complimentary natural health medicine that my friend could use along with the conventional chemotherapy her doctor has recommended.

Strengthening the immune system.

Chemotherapy weakens the immune system. Complimentary medicine taken along with the conventional treatment gives patients the immune strength needed to fight the disease. Alternative therapy in the form of complimentary medicines such as some of those listed below can also kill cancer cells and prevent new ones from forming.

Diet

Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and other legumes contain the antioxidants and other nutrients needed to fight free radicals that cause cancer and destroy the immune system. All these foods contain the highest concentration of antioxidants available. Raw foods also work to flush toxins from the body so it can better fight the leukemia.

Vitamin A

A recent study showed Vitamin A to be 33% effective in curing leukemia even without chemotherapy. This percentage may not seem high until compared with the success rate of chemotherapy on most cancers, which is a mere 2%. Alternative therapy and a proper diet have in fact bested chemotherapy in most cases.

Green tea / White tea

Green tea is extremely high in antioxidants. It also has antimicrobial properties. These two things help to fight the growth of new cancer cells as well as killing the old ones. It's now been proven that white tea contains as much as three times the antioxidant power as green tea. Fight leukemia better by using three cups of white tea daily as an alternative therapy.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol has gained a reputation for weight loss and anti-aging properties. One study has shown resveratrol as an alternative therapy for leukemia. This is sometimes utilized through a grape fast. Resveratrol causes apoptosis in cancer cells. That is to say it essentially encourages these cells to commit self destruction. Resveratrol also strengthens healthy cells, thereby strengthening the immune system to promote healing.

Bilberry

Bilberry is a commonly eaten berry in Britain but may be less familiar to Americans. It has formerly been given credit for positive effects on the vision, circulation problems and as an anti-aging collagen builder. A study has shown that phenolic compounds in Bilberry inhibit growth and encourage apoptosis in HL60 leukemia cells.

What to Avoid

Nitrates such as those found in hot dogs, pepperoni and other processed meats can be very harmful to leukemia patients. There is some debate over whether children living near nuclear power plants, high power electric lines and high concentrations of chemicals have a significantly higher chance of developing leukemia and other cancers. Still, why take a chance?

What to Embrace

In order to give the body time to heal itself, positive energy from pleasant activities must come into play. A depressed mind encourages a depressed body. Recent studies have shown that laughter actually does strengthen the immune system and cleanse the body of toxins. Yoga has long been known to have these very same benefits. Sleep is how the body regenerates itself from daily stress. All these can help as alternative therapy to compliment traditional medicine for leukemia.
