You're itching and scratching like crazy. Dry skin relief entails finding the cause. Dry skin and scalp are caused by a variety of factors. Maybe it's the environment. Could be the dry winter weather. Might be allergies. Whatever the reason, there are just as many ways to soothe your dry skin and scalp. Why use expensive creams and lotions when there are safe, alternative remedies for soothing dry skin and scalp?
Are you using the right soap?
Most soap contains added perfume, dyes, and other irritants. These can harm your skin and cause it to be dry, flaky, and itchy. I use glycerin based soap to combat dry skin. It's very mild and rinses off completely. It leaves you clean and fresh, not covered with drying soap residue. You can purchase glycerin soap just about anywhere or you can make your own, using ingredients from a soap supply or craft store.
Note: Some people have allergies or sensitivity to glycerin. Try a coconut oil based soap instead for soft, smooth skin.
The hair care products you use are equally important.
Your health food store should carry a shampoo made with all natural moisturizers that will make a marked difference in dry scalp. Try rinsing with apple cider vinegar and conditioning with avocado. Another tip that works well is to rub mineral oil into your scalp. Leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse out. Shampoo as usual.
Colloidal oatmeal is a fabulous remedy for dry skin.
This is simply oatmeal that has been ground powdery fine. It dissolves easily. Use it in your bath for a soothing soak. There are also lotions and soaps made with oatmeal, which are very gentle to your skin. Oatmeal has been used for centuries to relieve dry skin and itch.
We all know about Aloe Vera.
It's great for sunburns. Aloe Vera is also an effective dry skin remedy. It has antiseptic and anti-fungal properties too. Why not grow an Aloe Vera plant in your own home? Break off a leaf to squeeze out fresh Aloe Vera gel. You can also purchase Aloe Vera gel in any store where beauty products are sold.
Coconut oil leaves your skin feeling wonderfully soft and fresh smelling.
The scent will remind you of a day at the beach. Many suntan lotions contain coconut oil because of it's skin softening abilities. Be careful in the sun. Coconut and other oils will attract the suns rays. They may cause further problems through overexposure and burning.
Cocoa butter is often used by pregnant women to prevent stretch marks.
Why does this work so well? It makes skin soft and pliable. Then, it stretches without a lot of stress. For that same reason, Cocoa butter works very well as a moisturizer.
Here's a popular treatment for ultra dry skin.
No matter what moisturizer you use, apply it liberally. Then, put on gloves, socks, and sweats. Let the moisturizer soak in overnight while you sleep. You may look pretty ridiculous but you'll wake up feeling smooth as a baby.
Soak, rinse and drench yourself in moisture.
Then, avoid the sun and elements as much as possible. When you have to be in harsh weather, wear protective clothing to support your skin care regimen. Always protect yourself from the sun and wind. Avoid harsh detergents and cleaning products. Wear gloves when you clean or wash dishes. Soon people will be remarking about how young you look and how soft and glowing your skin is. Bye bye, dry skin.
