Alternate History-General Custer and the New England Patriots

As a history nerd, it has always been fun to speculate as to what might have happened had the ending changed.  Alfred Thomas Catalfo was not able to alter the past in reality, but on the alternate universe of film, it is no problem.

Mr. Catalfo changes the Battle of Little Bighorn.  Not so Custer won, that is small potatoes to us in our parochial Nova Anglian universe.  No, our man brings about true tragedy, a Patriots super bowl loss.

Below is the story of Bighorn,

BIGHORN is a supernatural historical fantasy based on a true fact: that General Custer's bandmaster, Felix Vinatieri -- an Italian immigrant and the great-great-grandfather of Super Bowl-winning kicker Adam Vinatieri -- was ordered to stay behind at the 7th Cavalry's Powder River camp and missed the Battle of the Little Bighorn where Custer and his entire regiment were annihilated. The Twilight Zone-ish story takes place in 2002 and 1876. The film is a winner of the 2011 Online New England Film Festival and has recently been the subject of full-page articles in the New York Daily News and Boston Herald. NFL Films graciously granted us permission to use footage from the 2002 Super Bowl. Nathaniel Philbrick, Pulitzer Prize-nominated author of the New York Times Bestseller "The Last Stand," applauded BIGHORN on his blog, calling it "an ingenious and demented intermingling of the Battle of the Little Bighorn with the New England Patriots" and telling his readers "you've got to see this movie!" The renowned Steve Alexander, recognized by the U.S. Congress as the world’s foremost Custer living historian, portrays Custer.

Richard Murphy saw his first movie at four years of age and has loved cinema ever since. He is especially fond of film noir, which is surprising considering his sunny disposition. Richard can be reached at alabunz@gmail.com
