As his first act as Interim Executive Director, Mark Chenovick has appointed Troy Wageman the new Interim Artistic Director of Seattle Musical Theatre (SMT).
“I feel blessed that Mr. Wageman is willing to assist SMT during this time of transition,” said Chenovick. “His artistry and integrity is beyond reproach and the passion he has for musical theater is exactly what SMT needs right now. Besides overseeing the productions in the current season, Wageman will also be assisting in plotting a course for the future of SMT.”
When asked for comment, Wageman said “I am absolutely thrilled to be taking on this formative position over the coming months. I have always had a special place in my heart for this organization, and I am elated to be given the chance to help this theater rise to where it can and should be in the Seattle theater landscape. I bring with me a hunger for artistic satisfaction and excellence that I feel will be well utilized in the formative times ahead. I am honored to help guide young and upcoming talent and help them achieve their goals in artistic fulfillment. I am motivated to raise the standard in which this organization holds for the musical theater art form and proving that a smaller company can and will compete with larger houses in the area. Regaining the communities trust and support of this organization will be my main focus through artistic integrity.”
Wagemen was last seen at SMT as director for the hit Altar Boyz during the 2012-2013 season. Prior to that, he choreographed The Drowsy Chaperone under the direction of Brandon Ivie.
“With the success of Altar Boyz last season,” said Mark Nihart, President of SMT’s Board of Directors, “Troy truly brought a new perspective and enthusiasm to the theatre that excited us. Troy is a great addition to the SMT interim team.”
SMT will conduct a formal search to find new managing and artistic directors once Season 36 Metamorphosis is under way.
