Also good works beyond religion

Sermons outside of church, synagogue, and mosque
I grew up hearing “it’s not by works, but by faith” that constitutes salvation, and salvation, I heard preached, was in my self- interest. As I matured, I came to understand that this was not the best religion had to offer. I saw that religion has oscillated between self-interest in salvation and even more was corrupted by the prosperity gospel and the concern for the voiceless and disadvantaged. So I take some heart knowing that its many teaching of industriousness, joys of living, care for our bodies, commitment to the environment, frugality and simple living and its commitment to charities merit its existence and outweigh its selfish interests.
But religion, fortunately doesn’t have sole (or soul) possession of good deeds. Evidence of this emerges in good works so much needed in our times. So it is in a LinkedIn post today: Forget The Selfie. Let's Make 2013 The Year Of The Unselfie by Matthew Bishop, US Business Editor at The Economist; guest interviewer for; speaker through Leading Authorities, December 02, 2013

#givingtuesday 2013 is shaping up to be even bigger. Already, over 8,000 organisations in all 50 US states have signed up as partners, from charities to businesses to small towns to cities. A group of charities in Baltimore have come together to pledge jointly to raise $5m on the day. New partnerships are emerging between the super rich and the rest of us as billionaires such as Steve and Jean Case and others offer to match #givingtuesday gifts with similar amounts of their own cash. And it is going global: significant #givingtuesday campaigns are under way in countries such as Australia, Canada, Israel, Mexico, Argentina and Singapore.
