Alpine, Squaw offer beginners a deal

January is National Learn to Ski and Ride month. Resorts are tapping into this by offering beginners a chance to ski for less.

Squaw and Alpine are setting four days, 2 at each resort, as learning opportunities for adult, first time, skier and boarders.

$39 will get the first timers a half-day lesson, along with a beginner lift ticket and equipment rental. That's a pretty good deal. Other Tahoe resorts are also offering the $39 deal at different times during the season.

On January 12 and 26, the $39 package is offered at Squaw Valley, and January 13 and 27 will see the same deal at Alpine Meadows. This is in conjunction with a national campaign to introduce newbies to the sport.

"Humans Were Never Meant to Hibernate" is the marketing cry of the Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month advocacy groups across the nation.

Working with the ski resorts, manufacturers, National Ski Area Association, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, Snowsports Industry Association, Professional Ski Instructors of America, National Ski Patrol, the U.S. Forest Service, the goal is to bring the sport to the forefront of winter recreation nation wide.

Over 300 ski resorts and Nordic centers offer this type of program in January. It is a good time, especially this year with the great snow in the Sierra, to get a start in a great winter sport.
