When one lives in a hamlet, one has a limited number of options. One may focus on the subtle aspects of the beauty surely contained within or one may focus on revenge for the dead king.
I do live in a hamlet, nestled at the foot of Laguna where my backyard fence runs into the Cleveland National Forest, where horse trails attract riders from all around the world, where when autumn colors bloom, they stop the heart of even the least poetic viewers of life and all this builds a great appetite for a bite to eat.
When this urge to gorge becomes strong enough, I pack up the family jalopy and push a bit west to the big city life of Alpine California. Yes yes yes... Alpine has it all. Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and there is a fair bit of American cuisine for the asking all in Alpine California.
Over the years I have eaten at them all. Janet’s Montana Grill http://www.examiner.com/review/janet-s-montana-cafe-is-far-more-than-jus... is a hometown favorite as witnessed by the parking lot on any given Sunday... It is usually packed. This year, as autumn first hinted at its coming, Nancy and I packed in as many patio meals as possible simply because there is none better for dinning alfresco than Janet’s in Alpine.
For reliability I believe you’ll never do wrong if you go grazing at Jimmy’s http://www.examiner.com/article/alpine-back-on-track-with-another-new-ea... on Arnold Way in Alpine. Ironically their parking lot has never turned us away due to too many cars fighting for too few slots and the food is always great with a fair price for plates overflowing.
My usual dilemma when it comes to dining on good Mexican food is that my palate typically enjoys taco shop food while my body craves the loving care offered by 5 star restaurants. The trouble is I usually prefer the taste of the food offered at taco shops better than at restaurants.
La Carreta Mexican Restaurant offers a good chance to offset that dichotomy. Located at 1347 Tavern Rd. they have been a staple in Alpine for decades so you know you’ve got a fighting chance of a good experience should you elect to spend your greenbacks within this pleasant environment. I’ve enjoyed great food here. I’ve typically enjoyed good service here. I’ve been dining with them for decades now so I know of what I speak when I say you’ve got a good chance of enjoying your meal when you dine at La Carreta’s in Alpine.
