Alphabet activities: The letter I
Last time we looked at letter H activities. Now we will see some ideas for learning about the letter I. Be sure to check the photo album at the bottom of the page for pictures of example activities.
Letter I activity options:
- Words that begin with I include iguana, ice, icky, igloo, ice cream, ice skating, icing, Inca, iron, island, iris, ivy, ivory, itch and itsy bitsy. Talk about those words.
- Paint an I with colored icing. You can do this on an I-shaped cookie.
- Celebrate your study of the letter I by eating foods like iceberg lettuce, Italian dressing, iced tea, indian food, instant oatmeal, Idaho potatoes and ice cream.
- Take a field trip to an ice skating rink. While you are there, see if you can scratch an I into the ice with your skate blade.
- Create a tropical island scene. Cut out brown ovals from construction paper to make islands. Have your child glue the islands to blue paper in the shape of an I. Add to the scene by drawing or pasting cutouts of palm trees and tropical animals.
- Incorporate geography by learning about Israel, Iraq, India, Ireland, Iceland and Italy.
- Make a sun catcher by placing ivy leaves in the shape of an I between two sheets of waxed paper. Use an iron (another I word!) to press the sheets until they melt together. Display in a sunny window.
- Teach your child the word "illuminate." Using markers or crayons, decorate a white paper bag with the letter I. Put sand in the bottom of the bag along with a votive candle to make a festive centerpiece for your letter I meal. Another option would be to create an I-shaped candle using Sillycone trays.
- Make an egg-carton inchworm and write the letter I on each section of his body. Simply cut one row of egg holders away from the carton and decorate with googly eyes and markers. Another option is to print off an inchworm coloring page.
- Sing letter I songs such as "Itsy Bitsy Spider."
- Make an Itsy Bitsy Spider's web craft. See the photo album for more information.
- Construct an igloo from sugar cubes.
- Draw an I with indigo.
