Backcountry skiing fun!
J Ferris

Alpenglow Sports has announced that their Mountain Festival is under way. Anyone interested in backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, or avalanche knowledge, would do well to take advantage of this 2 week festival.

This fantastic shop is located in Tahoe City. They transition from hiking and camping gear and support for part of the year, and when the season begins to turn to late autumn and winter, it's a full on winter gear shop. The important part is this: the people who work there are hikers, downhill skiers, backcountry skiers, and general outdoor enthusiasts.

The Mountain Festival is presented by Nature's Bakery. The event started on February 14 and will run through March 2. Daily events are designed to "...bring you a two week celebration of human-powered events, clinics, presentations, film and more! Driven by fun, community, health, education and the embodiment of the mountain lifestyle, the Festival will showcase some of the best winter activities Lake Tahoe has to offer."

Newbies to outdoor winter recreation and deep backcountry experts will find something during the two weeks of the Festival to latch on to. One of the kickers is that by participating, you could be the lucky person who skis off with an amazing package of winter gear.

Here's what's in the package: Fischer Carbonlite Skate Skis, Salomon S-LAB Skate Ski Boots, Salomon Pilot Equipe Skate Bindings, Madshus Skate Ski Poles and a Nature's Bakery Fuel Kit. This collection of gear is worth $1400. Signing up won't cost you anything.

During the two weeks of the Festival you can choose what interests you most. The list of events is extensive:

Guided Snowshoe, Backcountry and Nordic Ski Tours

Cross Country Skills and Waxing Clinics

AIARE Certified Field and Classroom Avalanche Safety Skills Clinics

Presentations by Leading Athletes, Historians and Recreational Enthusiasts

Check out the dates and places where these events will take place here.

All of the events of the Festival are free. Alpenglow does say that space is limited. If you are interested in attending any of the events, sign-up now. This may be the most fun you'll have learning about winter recreation.
