Almirola subs for injured Annett in Phoenix Nationwide race

On Tuesday evening, Richard Petty Motorsports released an update on the medical status of NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Michael Annett. Annett was transported to Halifax Hospital near Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Saturday after the driver and his No. 43 car were involved in a wreck during the DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona.

According to the release from RPM, Annett has suffered a fracture and dislocated sternum. He'll undergo surgery in Charlotte and will be out of the race car for an unknown period of time.

As a result, Aric Almirola, driver of the No. 43 entry of Richard Petty Motorsports in the Sprint Cup Series will fill in for Annett in Saturday's Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. No specific plans have been made for RPM's No. 43 Nationwide Series team have been made beyond the Phoenix race.
