Alley Cat Allies speaks out against senseless killing of animals in Ohio

Alley Cat Allies never rests in their fight for justice for the animals. The organization is calling for the dismissal of an Ohio animal humane officer who has repeatedly killed – first kittens, and now a trapped, defenseless baby raccoon.

It was one year ago that North Ridgeville Humane Officer Barry Accorti shot and killed five kittens in an Ohio residential neighborhood while children looked on. This senseless act received national attention, and the poor kittens were nicknamed the “woodpile five.”

Becky Robinson, president and founder of Alley Cat Allies, had this to say in her recent press release:

“These cruel practices cannot and will not be tolerated. The fact that a duplicate incident has arisen, with the same officer - who was, against advisement, permitted to keep his job - and the same supervisor, demonstrates the clear need for real change after last year’s cruel event. The city must adopt best practices as modeled in many of their neighboring towns in Ohio carrying out nonlethal control and humane education.”

The executive director of the Ohio SPCA, Teresa Landon, was also quoted:

“The culture of cruelty in North Ridgeville needs to change. The Ohio SPCA receives calls about cats and wildlife, and are always able to find a humane resolution. North Ridgeville has no excuse.”

Alley Cat Allies now calls for the immediate dismissal of Humane Officer Barry Accorti and Police Chief Michael Freeman in a letter addressed to Mayor G. David Gillock.

“We’re not just cat advocates, we’re animal advocates - and it’s clear that North Ridgeville needs new leadership - qualified, true humane animal care professionals,” said Robinson.

Alley Cat Allies is the only national advocacy organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cats. Learn more about Alley Cat Allies and the work they accomplish across the nation on their website, www.alleycat.org.
