Bella was a young Dachshund with a major jumping issue. She jumped off the couch, her owner’s lap, chairs and down several stairs at once which can happen when your body is twice as long as your legs. But after launching herself off the couch one day her owner noticed a bit of a limp. “I just noticed she had trouble going down the stairs. She took them one at a time,” said Carlen McMahon. It wasn’t long before a trip down the stairs ended tragically: Bella was paralyzed in her back end.
Bella’s owners were scared for her and another wrinkle formed in developing a treatment plan for her. Her owners were about to embark on a long anticipated cruise, the trip of a lifetime for them. After an initial exam, Bella’s owners were sent to an orthopedic specialist. Surgery for her back would cost them thousands without a guarantee that she would become well again. With the trip coming up, they decided to try holistic healing options instead of surgery.
Bella’s treatment began with a specialized herbal formula designed to strengthen her muscles, tendons and joints. Bella stayed in the veterinary hospital for ten days while she had acupuncture and Tui Na treatments sometimes several times per day. After a few days, Bella’s back end started to show some movement and she was transferred to a doggie cart, or wheelchair, and soon her tail started to wag.
In ten days, Bella was walking again with no surgery and at a fraction of the cost of traditional care. Bella is now walking with only a slight limp. She has strict orders to curb her jumping habit. Her owners couldn’t have been happier after returning from their cruise to find their little Bella walking again. “It was a miracle! We are so pleased with the successful outcome and it was much lighter on our pocketbook!” said the McMahon's.
