Have a yeast infection? Allergic to conventional treatment? There are a variety of natural remedies for a vaginal yeast infection. A surprising number of women are allergic to conventional medicine, whether it be for a vaginal yeast infection or some other ailment. There's no reason to suffer when there are so many natural remedies.

Keep clean and dry

Keeping the vaginal area clean and dry will prevent a yeast infection from developing. Shower more often in the summer when you are likely to be perspiring more. Be careful about soap choices. Those allergic to conventional medicine may react to fragrance and other additives. This will not cause a vaginal yeast infection, but may irritate infected or inflamed tissue.

Sterilize clothing

Already have a yeast infection? Keep any clothing which comes in contact with the vaginal area extremely clean and sterile. Using either conventional medicine or natural remedies will be ineffective if garments are harboring a yeast infection. Wash all clothing thoroughly between uses with hot soapy water. Avoid perfumes which may cause allergic reaction. Boil and bleach undergarments if possible.

Avoid sex

Sexual intercourse can worsen a vaginal yeast infection. It's best not to have sex while you are experiencing yeast infection symptoms. There's also some evidence that a vaginal yeast infection can be passed to a male partner, causing you to be continually reinfected. Clean the vaginal area both before and after sex when not infected to keep yeast at bay.

Wear loose fitting cotton clothing

Tight nylon clothing can cause perspiration and irritation. Yeast breeds freely in a moist environment. Clothing should allow free air circulation. Nylon underclothing may also cause an allergic reaction in some woman. When heading for bed, consider skipping the undergarments. These natural remedies allow the vaginal area to breathe. Be sure to shower prior to bedtime to keep germs at a minimum.


A vinegar and salt water bath is among the best natural remedies for a vaginal yeast infection. Try soaking in a bath with about ½ cup salt and ½ cup vinegar. It is normally unnecessary to douche as the vaginal area is self cleansing. If you have a yeast infection, a prepared vinegar and water douche is among natural remedies. Patch test for allergic reaction prior to use.

Sugar and yeast

Avoid eating excess sugar. Sugar is food for yeast. Avoid foods containing yeasts and molds. This would include things like breads, wine, beer, cheese, pickles and fruit juice. Women who have a problem with repeated yeast infections may develop allergic reactions to this type of food. Introducing more yeast into a body with a yeast infection is one of those natural remedies that just makes sense.

Tampon use

Tampon use is not recommended for women who have a history of vaginal yeast infection. If you must use tampons, consider using all natural cotton tampons. These wick moisture away, rather than leaving it on the surface to breed yeast. Pads are great as natural remedies for yeast infection. Whichever method you use, remember to change often.

Dyes, perfumes and powders

Avoid dyes and perfumes next to the skin. These can irritate a vaginal yeast infection or cause an allergic reaction. Dyes and perfumes are found in unusual places such as toilet tissue. Be vigilant about reading labels. Powder may seem to be among natural remedies but it is actually just a breeding ground for yeast.


This may be one of the craziest natural remedies for a vaginal yeast infection. It's also the most effective. Simply peel a clove of garlic and insert it into the vagina for about an hour. Repeat as needed using fresh garlic. Some people attach a string of dental floss for removal. The natural anti fungal properties of garlic go right to work on the yeast.
