Allentown's civil service testing center to remain closed

Allentown's civil service testing center closed it doors last August. The civil exam site, which was housed in the old CareerLink building at 1601 Union Blvd., was thought to be re-opening after the new PA budget was passed.

However, according to the Pennsylvania Civil Service Commission, Governor Tom Corbett's proposed cuts will not only keep the Allentown site closed, but four other locations are in jeopardy.

Although the commission's $13.5 million budget is only be reduced by $188,000, the commission is suggesting that not only will the Allentown office remain closed; the Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton centers will most likely close, also.

State Rep. Mike Schlossberg, opposes closing the centers, because it makes it harder for residents to apply for and get these good paying, family jobs. Others in the Governor's office believes that it is the Commission deciding to close these offices on their own, and not due to such a tiny reduction in their budget.

Either way, if the Civil Service Commission keeps its plan in place, the only civil exams testing centers that would remain open is Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg. The only way residents can apply for any type of civil service job at any level, would be to travel to one of the three remaining sites and take the test.
