Allen Park lawyer Brent Hunt disbarred

The State of Michigan Attorney Discipline Board (ADB) has disbarred Allen Park attorney Brent S. Hunt, the ADB reported Monday. The disbarment is deemed effective Jan. 26, 2013.

Hunt admitted to ADB Tri-County Hearing Panel #11 that from 2003 to 2009 he commingled and misappropriated the sum of $7,423.00, which he was holding pending distribution to the conservator of the estate of a legally impaired person. Hunt acknowledged to the panel that he placed the funds in his business account and, for approximately six years, used the money to pay general law office expenses.

The panel entered an order of reprimand with conditions. The Grievance Administrator and Hunt each filed a petition for review.

In its opinion following review proceedings, the ADB concluded that:

On the issue presented in the Grievance Administrator's petition for review, we are unable to reconcile the discipline system's paramount duty of public protection with the imposition of a sanction less than disbarment under the facts and circumstances of this case.

On Dec. 28, 2012, the ADB entered an order increasing discipline from a reprimand to disbarment. The ADB also directed Hunt to pay costs of $2,204.09.
