Let’s face it. It hasn’t been Allen Iverson’s year. He had to battle his home out of foreclosure, got hit for a cool $3 million in his divorce from wife Tawanna and now, according to TMZ on Feb. 3, an Atlanta judge has awarded legal and physical custody of his kids to Tawanna, stopping just short of calling him one of the the worst parents in history.
Allen Iverson is now officially single, the judge having signed his divorce from Tawanna Iverson, mother of his five kids. Unfortunately, the judge also added a few words on his parenting skills. . . or lack thereof.
"[Iverson] does not know how to manage the children; has little interest in learning to manage the children and has actually, at times, been a hindrance to their spiritual and emotional growth and development.
“For example, he has refused to attend to an obvious and serious alcohol problem, which has caused him to do inappropriate things in the presence of the children while impaired.
“He has left the children alone without supervision. He has left his young daughters in a hotel room with men who are unknown to the mother."
Allen Iverson does have visitation rights, but under some very strict conditions, like he must not drink a drop of alcohol for the next 18 months. Also, that he can’t consume any alcohol within 24 hours of the visitations until all of his kids reach the age of 18.
He also has been court ordered to see a psychiatrist and attend AA meetings for a minimum of one year.
Will he comply? Only time will tell. He was once the best player in the NBA and, to many, he’s still the face of the Philadelphia 76ers. I don’t think there’s a question as to if he can do it, but only if he wants it bad enough.
