Alleged drunk driver arrested after fatal crash in Huntington

A Brentwood man was arrested Monday on drunken driving charges after his vehicle was involved in a fatal accident on the Northern State Parkway in Huntington, New York State police said.

Police charged Yunior Josue Bonilla, 25, of Brentwood with driving while intoxicated after an investigation revealed he had consumed alcohol at a night club before driving his 2002 Mercedes.

Investigators said Bonilla and three passengers were involved in the crash after leaving a Westbury nightclub at closing. They were headed back to Brentwood when the accident occurred, a police news release said.

A passenger in the front seat, Gabriel Herrera-Mina, 26, of Brentwood, was not wearing his seat belt when the Mercedes left the roadway and crashed into a tree. Authorities said Herrera-Mina was critically injured after the crash and was rushed by emergency crews to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two additional passengers were treated for minor injuries and released from area hospitals, cops said.

According to State Police investigators, witnesses reported seeing Bonilla “drinking at the night club prior to driving the car.” Eastbound lanes of the Northern State Parkway in the area were closed to traffic for more than six hours as State Police conducted an on scene investigation.

Police said additional charges may be brought against Bonilla as the investigation continues. Arraignment details were not immediately available.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to contact the New York State Police at 631-756-3300 or 631-231-6389. All calls will remain confidential.
