Book Title: All the Tea in Chicago
Book Author: Susan Blumberg-Kason
Publisher: Des Voeux Press
Review:
As I noted in my recent podcast on afternoon tea bargains, some of the best places to take tea in Chicago (or in any big city) are tiny, out-of-the-way tearooms. But how do thirsty tea-lovers find these treasures?
Check out All the Tea in Chicago. (Special thanks to my wonderful writer-friend Shawna Atteberry for giving me this lovely book!)
Author Susan Blumberg-Kason has put together a comprehensive guidebook to tea rooms, shops, and afternoon tea service in Chicago and our surrounding suburbs. Each entry in this thin (about 100 pages) and narrow (perfect for pocket or purse) guide includes the name of the tea room/store, its website address, phone number and address, along with a brief descriptive summary. If the tea room or shop has any additional locations, Blumberg-Kason thoughtfully includes those as well.
I like the fact that Blumberg-Kason clearly knows her tea, but also recognizes that many reading her book are not "tea snobs" but are just folks looking for a special treat for themselves or their friends. I also appreciate that she has listed shops that are not tea-specialists per se, but that do offer teas that are recognized as being good quality. This is extremely helpful for those folks who may not want to go out of their way to buy tea, but who would like to be able to get good tea in their neighborhood.
Please note that this is a guidebook, not a review book: If you are interested in reading reviews of tea rooms or tea shops, better to check out Yelp or similar services. Also, it is always wise to call ahead before visiting a tea room or shop: They may have gone out of business, moved, or they may be closed on the day you decide to visit, and you don't want to be disappointed!
