Just recently I witnessed an argument between two pro-lifers about methods of trying to abolish abortion. On one side, the person was of the mindset that there is only one kind of pro-life legislation that should be passed, that being one that outlaws abortion in full and any kind of abortifacient and any support of any lesser bill would be morally wrong. And on the other side, the approach of incrementally getting to the point of abortion being illegal prevailed. This argument went on for a while with both sides admitting defeat and walking away from the argument a little bruised.
This really got me thinking about what my opinion is about this conflict within the pro-life movement. Initially when I started volunteering in the movement I was under the mindset that any bill that does not outlaw abortion in full would be immoral to support. I believed this because in my mind it would still advocate for abortion. But during my freshman year at college I was asked to lead the Students for Life group that I belonged to and I started to read and talk to pro-life leaders and learn more about the movement itself. I eventually realized that any bill that would regulate abortion to make it less prevalent is much better than nothing.
Why would you turn down any opportunity to limit the amount of abortions that are performed? What I used to think as a cop-out compromise was actually a way that we could lower the amount of abortions to get to our desired end, a world without millions of babies murdered inside of the womb. Now we would have to remember when supporting this bill, we would have to specify this and make sure we make known that abortion is never legitimate and that we will fight to go even further after this bill is passed.
When we live in a world in which society is so broken, we should take what we can get and keep fighting until abortion is made illegal. Now keep in mind, always advocating for legislation that outlaws abortion in full is important, but if it comes down to it, supporting any proposed law that regulates abortion is important. We should save as many babies as we can at any given point in time because that bill that does it all in one sweeping motion may never come.
