All beasts against beast fights are now illegal at a federal level

Last week, President Obama signed the federal Farm Bill into law. One of the provisions of the Farm Bill made all beasts against beast fights illegal at a federal level.

Until last week, a state’s criminal animal cruelty statutes addressed animal fighting. All 50 states and the District of Columbia, had statutes on their books, but only 37 states and D.C. made it a felony act.

This provision of the bill was sponsored by U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), and many animal activists are singing her praise for successfully working to pass this important piece of legislation.

This part of the bill includes a provision making it a federal crime to attend or bring a child under the age of 16 to any animal fighting event.
