NCAA All-Americans and conference champs Ed Ruth of Penn State, and University of Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock, have accepted invitations to wrestle in the 184-pound match at the 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic Nov. 2, event sponsors revealed Friday.
This fall’s All-Stars will be the third time the two wrestlers from Eastern schools will have faced each other on the mat, with Ruth coming out on top in their two previous matches.
Ruth is a three-time NCAA All-American and two-time NCAA champ, winning back-to-back titles, first at 174 pounds at the 2012 NCAAs, followed by claiming the championship at 184 this past season. In addition, the Harrisburg, Pa. native – now a senior -- is a three-time Big Ten conference champion. Ruth currently owns an overall college record of 101-2.
Also a senior, Sheptock is a two-time ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) champion, claiming consecutive conference crowns in 2012 and 2013. A product of Northampton, Pa., Sheptock earned NCAA All-American honors for Maryland at the 2013 NCAAs, placing sixth at 184 pounds. Sheptock's collegiate mat record is 97-19.
Sheptock is the first Terrapin wrestler to be named to this year’s NWCA All-Star Classic roster; Ruth is the second Nittany Lion, joining teammate Matt Brown.
The Ruth-Sheptock match at 184 is the seventh to be announced for this year’s All-Stars. Two of the matches are unique out-of-weight-class bouts: Iowa's Tony Ramos vs. Devin Carter of Virginia Tech at 141, and, at 149, Ohio State’s Logan Stieber, and Oklahoma's Kendric Maple. Other bouts revealed earlier this week include Minnesota’s Tony Nelson vs. Northwestern’s Mike McMullan at heavyweight… Oregon State’s Taylor Meeks vs. Nelson’s teammate Scott Schiller at 197 pounds… Oklahoma's Andrew Howe vs. Penn State's Matt Brown at 174... and Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett vs. Oklahoma’s Jarrod Patterson at 125. All these matches – and others to be announced in the coming days -- will take place Nov. 2 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. just outside Washington, D.C.
An annual fixture on college wrestling schedule since 1967, the NWCA All-Star Classic traditionally features match-ups of the two top wrestlers in each weight class. For the past decade, the event has served as the kickoff for the national college wrestling season.
The 2013 All-Star Classic takes place Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:15 p.m. Eastern at Patriot Center on the GMU campus in suburban Washington, D.C. To purchase tickets to the event, visit the Ticketmaster website. For more information on the All-Star Classic, visit the NWCA website.
