All American Muslim: woman forces husband to dump senior dog

Last evening, ‘All American Muslim’ featured a segment on Wrigley, a senior beagle. Wrigley has been the very best friend and companion of Jeff, a recent convert to Islam, for the past 10 years. Wrigley is thought to be around 16 years old.

This heart-wrenching episode ended with Wrigley left at a sanctuary. Wrigley was trying to follow Jeff and his wife as they pulled away. The last shot was the sad face of this little dog left alone and unwanted.

Even though the wife didn’t want Wrigley, this poor dog was still trying to follow the car and return to the only home ever known…such as it was.

According to the wife, she had asthma and wanted to install new carpet, so the dog had to go. As she was laughingly posting Wrigley’s photos on telephone poles, she admitted she was not an animal person. She seemed quite healthy wandering around outside while posting the fliers, quite obviously unaffected by grasses, molds and other environmental elements which plague most allergy sufferers.

Recent discoveries have offered alternatives to pet owners suffering with allergies and asthma. Many former asthma and allergy patients now feeding their pets a raw meat diet have noted drops in their allergic reactions to their pets.

Forums and Facebook pages are host to conversations today about the callous treatment of a senior pet. Questions such a 'would you give up your pet for your faith?' abound the sites. Wrigley’s relinquishment is not about faith. It is about cold heartless mis-treatment of animals.

'All American Muslim' has followed the story of Jeff's conversion to Islam to be with this woman. He's faced fasting during Ramadan and thorough grilling from family members born into the faith, but nothing as emotionally devastating as being forced to dump his beloved companion, Wrigley.

Wrigley was broken hearted at the loss of her best friend, Jeff. Jeff talked about when he was alone and Wrigley was always there for him. When driving away, Jeff was beyond consoling and broke down sobbing.

In a country whose shelters are filled with unwanted pets, senior and otherwise, this program has unwittingly scrutinized the sad subject of a nationwide epidemic.
