Yesterday, January 16, 2013, I wrote two articles about Charlie, the AmStaff at SFACC in San Francisco. When some of the online posters began to attack the American Pit Bull Examiner articles and the book, Pit Bull Nation, it became time to clear up a few things.
Pit Bull Nation, although all the people names have been changed, is based on my experiences beginning a pit bull rescue in San Francisco where pit bulls are and were routinely destroyed because of their breed.
Without going into extensive detail, the book deals with the hurdles of shelter bureaucracy instilled by government employees paid to care for the city’s animals, but in fact, killing them.
Back in 1998, I was a lot younger and greener. I believed the system could work, but I suffered from one great flaw. I mistakenly fell under the notion that all involved were interested in a solution. I was wrong….dead wrong.
I spent years meeting with directors of San Francisco animal control. One series of meetings, as described in Pit Bull Nation, has come to be known as the ‘Spotlight Proposal’ in which one pit bull would be featured in local media and outreach until adopted. This was during the days in which a pit bull room was housed at SFACC. The director’s suggestion ultimately was to green light the ‘Spotlight Proposal,’ but euthanize all the others….all other pit bulls at SFACC!
I couldn’t believe my own ears and by the looks on the shocked faces in the room, neither could the department heads in attendance.
This is only one sad story about what goes on behind the walls at a city shelter. Not all facilities operate like this, but this one does. I spent eight years writing Pit Bull Nation about my own experiences with the dogs and cats in San Francisco and the fraction I’ve been able to save.
Pit Bull Nation is for anyone who wants to save animals. I learned by saving ‘one dog at a time,’ the motto of Reunion Rescue.
None of the dogs’ names have been changed in the book. This is their story. It’s a story about survival and about life. Pit Bull Nation shares the work of Reunion Rescue as the only raw-feeding holistic and homeopathic no-kill refuge in the United States. Anyone can do this work and amazingly, on a shoestring.
The work of Reunion Rescue moves through the pages of Pit Bull Nation, each chapter filled with actual real lives who wound up at this very high kill facility. Actual photographs, kennel cards, shelter A numbers, Chameleon software impound documentation personel records and communications were used in creating Pit Bull Nation.
Some of the newcomers to rescue work who have found issue with Reunion Rescue and promotion of Pit Bull Nation may not realize even on that proverbial shoestring budget, rescue does cost. For the record, every penny made from Pit Bull Nation’s sales and every click of an American Pit Bull Examiner story goes toward saving dogs.
For those interested in seeing where the pennies go, please visit Reunion Rescue on Facebook. See some of the other animals who were to be killed at SFACC and other death row shelters in California and Texas featured in our photo albums.
Home Remedies to Heal Animals Facebook page was created to show others how we’ve cured everything from kennel cough to heartworm, cancer to fleas with diet, homeopathy and herbs.
Our Facebook page Reunion Rescue No Kill Refuge shares our vision and experiences saving lives of beautiful animals cast off by society and dumped in death row shelters.
The mission of Pit Bull Nation and Reunion Rescue is to share a program that really works and heals so that someday, no shelter will get away with murder.
This book is for every animal lover and future rescue who wants to make a difference. It is for those who like me, do not think it’s ok to kill an adoptable and otherwise healthy animal. It’s to close the loophole some facilities use for an excuse to kill those animals. It’s for those who believe and mainly, above all else, it’s for the animals.
Please comment and share your thoughts. All opinions are welcome. The only real enemy is ignorance.
Cindy Marabito of Reunion Rescue writes the American Pit Bull Examiner stories to save lives. Every click on a story donates to the animals.
