Sweeney – who has also hosted NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” for the past 7 years -- made the announcement on the Jan. 20 episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” saying that she’s ready to spend more time with her kids, aged 5 and 9.
“I’ve been on ‘Days of Our Lives’ since I was 16-years-old,” the actress said. “And I have never had more than a two-week vacation in that whole time … I love Sami, I love Salem, I love my job, I love daytime, I love the fans, I love everything about it.”
While she revealed that she’ll continue on with the role of Sami for the remainder of this year, she said her character’s days are definitely numbered.
As for what will become sometimes-sinister Sami, Sweeney’s not sure: “I don’t know!” she told DeGeneres. “I mean it would be awesome to have some kind of happy ending, but then I also think Sami probably deserves some sort of very twisted like ‘Breaking Bad’ ending, I don’t know.”
While DeGeneres joked that it would be hilarious if Sami “became a meth dealer and then people come after you or something,” Sweeney acknowledged, “Well you know, [the writers] have amazing imaginations and Sami has certainly caused he fair share of drama over the last 21 years. It will be 22 and I don’t even know what happens next. I’m so like flustered.”
In 2012, Sweeney told Redbook she had her first real kiss on “Days.” Since then, her character’s done plenty of kissing—she’s not named Sami Brady Horton DiMera Brady Hernandez for nothing. At the time, Sweeney said, "It's nice showing up to the same place every day for that long. This feels like school. After all, I've been here since I was 16.”
