Alice is going back to Wonderland. On August 5 E! Online posted the news that production on "Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass" is beginning this week and the full cast has been announced. The film is a sequel to the 2010 film "Alice in Wonderland," the live action film directed by Tim Burton. The new film will shoot on location at Shepperton Studios in London, with principal photography beginning over the next few days.
Actress Mia Wasikowska will reprise the lead role of Alice Kingsleigh, and Johnny Depp will return as the Mad Hatter. Additional returning cast members include Anne Hathaway as Mirana of Marmoreal (The White Queen), Helena Bonham Carter as Iracebeth of Crims (The Red Queen), and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Actors Alan Rickman, Michael Sheen, and Timothy Spall will also once again lend their voices as The Blue Caterpillar, The White Rabbit and Bayard. Stephen Fry will continue to voice the Cheshire Cat.
Newcomers include Rhys Ifans as the Mad Hatter's father, Ed Speelers as James Harcourt and Sacha Baron Cohen as Time. Actor Toby Jones will voice a new character named Wilkins. Tim Burton, who directed the first film, will pass the job to James Bobin, although he will stay on as a producer. The adventure film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 27, 2016 and will open in both IMAX and 3D.
On August 5 Comingsoon.net reported that the story for the new film is being kept under wraps, and Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay for the sequel as well as the original film. The first film earned over one billion dollars in ticket sales and was nominated for two Academy Awards, two of which were won for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction. Both films are based on the stories by author Lewis Carroll, and most of the crew are also returning for the project.
The new story will focus on Alice returning to Underland for a new adventure, one that possibly involves traveling through time. She is returning to help the Mad Hatter, who guided her through Underland the first time to return home. This will mark Alice's third time in Underland, since she also visited as a child, which was a major plot point of the first film. The new story will dive deeper into developing the characters while exploring new parts of Underland.
