Alice Walker documentary ‘Beauty in Truth’ to premiere on PBS

The documentary on famed author and activist Alice Walker will premiere tonight on PBS’ American Masters series. “Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth” chronicles the life and times of the Georgia born writer who became the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her 1982 novel “The Color Purple” .

The book was turned into an Oscar nominated film of the same name in 1985 which starred Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover who appears in the documentary and Whoopi Goldberg. “The Color Purple” was directed by Steven Spielberg and netted 11 Academy Awards nominations including nods for Goldberg and Winfrey for best actress and best supporting actress respectively.

In addition to Glover, Gloria Steinem, Quincy Jones and Speilberg offer insight into Walker’s life in the documentary which is directed by Pratibha Parmar. The presentation of the film is in celebration of Walker's 70th birthday and Black History Month.

Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth” airs Friday Feb. 7 on PBS at 9 p.m.
