Just days before the documentary about her life, “The Lady in Number 6: Music saved my life,” might win an Oscar; Alice Herz-Sommer has passed away at 110 years of age.

The documentary about Alice’s life is one of the five worthy docs, including the wonderful “CaveDigger,” has a great chance of walking away with a statue.

“The Lady in Number 6” is not a sad story about a woman who lived through Theresienstadt, (a feeder camp for Auschwitz), but is a celebration of Alice and her piano performances. This beautiful woman was a famous and very sought after pianist.. In the camp she actually performed for the horrible Nazi Josef Mengele.

Alice didn’t think that performing for Nazis was a bad thing to do, she thought making music at anytime was a very good thing. She thought of music day and night. When she wasn’t thinking about it, she was playing her piano to many people’s delight.

Alice died Friday in a hospital, according to her daughter-in-law Genevieve Sommer.

Always laughing, always happy, even in the face of adversity, Alice will be remembered for her music and her amazing spirit.

Read my review of “The Lady in Number 6” to learn more about this wonderful woman that taught many people by example to be even when the world around you is an evil place.

RIP Alice, you have certainly earned the right to play piano for the angels.
