Alexandra Wentworth created and starred in one of LA TV Insider Examiner's favorite half-hour comedies of all time with Head Case on STARZ and has been a writer and performer we have been tracking ever since. And by tracking, we of course mostly mean following on Twitter and hoping to get inspired for our own comedy needs. She may have a Yahoo web series to help with that, and she shared that she is writing a pilot based on her book, but for those of you more interested in traditional TV comedies, she will also be guest starring on Cougar Town as Tom's (Bob Clendenin) new girlfriend.
Yes, you read that right! Executive Producer Bill Lawrence wanted to "de-creepy" Tom now that he is officially a part of the cul-de-sac crew, and one of the ways to show his humanity and vulnerability is to put him in a relationship-- especially one that is not really a good one.
"I play a gold-digging hussy. She read like somebody who was going after this guy for his money, but it is Cougar Town, so I played her like someone out of the Real Housewives of Atlanta," Wentworth said to LA TV Insider Examiner on a conference call to preview her episode.
To Wentworth, that means "lots of extensions in my hair, lots of tan, boobs up to my chin. You kind of have to kind of juge it up a little!"
After all, this is a single woman in her 40s on the prowl, so to speak, in Florida, just trying to land herself a rich man. And Tom should fit the bill, being a doctor and all. But also, Tom is kind of desperate for attention and affection of any kind, so he might be more willing than most to put up with carrying the wallet in the relationship.
Wentworth is good friends with both Courteney Cox and Christa Miller in real life, and that level of comfort, along with her natural penchant for comedy, lent itself perfectly to a looser shooting atmosphere, in which Wentworth shared she was allowed to adlib dialogue, not just an attitude, that felt right for the character.
Though things don't go so well when Jules (Cox) realizes the nature of her gold-digging status, Wentworth shared that Lawrence and Co. have invited her back for another episode down the line.
"They shot this season [and] they'll see where they're at, but I would love to come back. And I had so much fun with Bob!" Wentworth shared.
"I feel like my life, especially with little kids, works well on the east coast, and I think as much as I would love it, if I went and did a series in L.A., I would be single-- which is no fun to be single when you're a middle-aged housewife. That's why I love to guest star; to go do something on Cougar Town for a week is the perfect amount for me!"
Cougar Town airs on TBS on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. "I Should Have Known It" airs on January 29th 2013. You can check out The Daily Shot with Ali Wentworth here. "Ali in Wonderland and Other Tall Tales" is available now, as well.
