Alexandria is proposing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along the Van Dorn/Beauregard corridor (West End Transitway) that will provide robust high-capacity transit operations between the Van Dorn Metrorail station, Shirlington Transit Center, Beauregard residential area and the Pentagon using a combination of dedicated and shared lanes. In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), as amended, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) as lead agency and the City of Alexandria as project sponsor are preparing a combined Alternatives Analysis and Environmental Assessment (AA/EA) for the West End Transitway.
This plan – a combined Alternatives Analysis and Environmental Assessment (AA/EA) for the West End Transitway – will provide a detailed level of analysis and engineering (an Alternatives Analysis), and include an environmental analysis and interagency review (an Environmental Assessment) which is required for the project to be eligible to receive federal funding. The future transitway will provide residents of the City an alternative mode of travel that is fast, efficient, comfortable and reliable. Agencies and the public will be invited to participate in the AA/EA for the West End Transitway to help the City of Alexandria identify transit ridership needs, tradeoffs, measures of success and hurdles to overcome.
