Less than a month after finishing an impressive second at the American Cup, Alexandra Raisman has won her first senior international title.

Raisman was the class of the field on the first day of the Trofeo Citta di Jesolo tournament, held Saturday in Jesolo, Italy, just north of Venice. The 16-year-old from Brestyan's Gymnastics in Massachusetts posted the highest scores of the meet on vault (15.15) and floor (14.55) and finished second on beam (14.25). She scored 13.7 on uneven bars for an all-around total of 57.65.

2009 European champion Ksenia Semyonova was second all-around after a very consistent day where she scored 14.6 on vault and 14.1 on everything else (56.9). 2006 World champion Vanessa Ferrari, making a recovery from foot surgery last summer, finished third, boosted by a second place finish on floor (14.4) and a third place finish on bars (14.3, 56.8 all-around total).

The U.S.'s Morgan Smith, in her first senior international competition, was fourth (56.3), followed by Russia's Ekaterina Kurbatova (56.0) and Americans Amanda Jetter (55.45) and Mackenzie Caquatto (55.25).

Caquatto missed several times on floor (11.65) but finished second on vault (14.95) and tied Russia's Tatiana Solovyeva for first on beam (14.3).

Russia's Tatiana Nabieva, another new senior, competed on vault and uneven bars. Her 15.15 on uneven bars was the highest score on that event.

The U.S.'s Kytra Hunter finished ninth, while Cincinatti Gymnastics Academy's Cassie Whitcomb competed only on bars (14.2) and floor (13.65).

The U.S. won the team title (228.45), followed by Russia (225.9) and Italy (220.3). The United Kingdom finished fourth after several gymnasts had difficulties on bars, beam and floor (204.45).

In the highly anticiapted junior competition, Russia's Anastasia Grishina, already well-known for her excellent work on beam and floor, won the all-around over U.S. junior champion Kyla Ross and Italian duo Erica Fasana and Andrea Foti.

Grishina delivered the highest score of the any competitor -- junior or senior -- with an astonishing 15.9 on uneven bars as the Russian juniors trumped their hosts 223.25-221.5. Japan was third (217.75), followed by Great Britain (202.8).

Grishina's all-around total was 59.45, more than 2.5 points above Ross (56.7) and the Italians (56.05). Russia's Anastasia Sidorova was fifth, followed by Japan's Yoshino Taniguchi and the U.S.'s Sabrina Vega, who sustained a five-tenth deduction on floor exercise (13.3).

Grishina was the only gymnast in the field to pair exceptional difficulty (her bar routine received a 6.5 start value) with great execution (the same routine was given a 9.4 for execution, practically unheard of). Fasana turned in the highest vault score (14.95 for a double-twisting Yurchenko), while Grishina was tops on beam (14.9) and floor (14.4), despite 0.1 neutral deductions on both events.

Japanese gymnasts had some of the highest difficulty scores but their execution marks were among the lowest (case in point: junior Natsumi Sasada, who received a 5.95 execution score for a bars routine with a difficulty value of 5.8, one of the highest D-scores on that event).

Balance beam sensation Mai Murakami turned in a routine with a 5.9 D-score but received only 7.55 from the judges. Murakami vaulted a double-twisting Yurchenko successfully but did not do all the difficulty she is capable of on floor exercise (5.0 D-panel).
