Alexander McQueen is dead of suicide at 40 years old.

His secondary fashion collection "MCQ", was due to show today at New York Fashion Week.  That show has been canceled.

It is seven days after his mother's death, and three years after the suicide of his friend and mentor, Isabella Blow took her own life ingesting the weedkiller Paraquat.

The eccentric fashion icon Isabella Blow recognized Alexander McQueen's talent before anybody else, in 1993, when the fashion industry dismissed McQueen as a theater costume designer.  When he was named to succeed John Galliano as head designer at Givenchy in 1996, McQueen attributed his success to Blow.

"Lee" McQueen stayed with Givenchy until 2001 but left to run his own label.  Alexander McQueen is now owned 51 per cent by Gucci.

McQueen and his 24-year-old partner George Forsyth married in the summer of 2000 on a yacht off Ibiza.  Kate Moss was the bridesmaid.

An ambulance was called to McQueen's Green Street home in Central London at 10:20 this morning, and found a 40-year-old man dead. They did not name McQueen but confirmed that the next of kin had been contacted.

The official statement at this time from his company:

  • On behalf of Lee McQueen's family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family.

Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.

UK newspaper THE SUN reports that McQueen was found hanged.

Alexander McQueen was named Designer of the Year four times from 1996 to 2003.
