Top ranked UFC light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson picked up an impressive win over the undefeated Jimi Manuwa at today's UFC Fight Night 37. The two met in the main event of the night which took place at the O2 Arena in London, England.
The first round had Manuwa come out showing no sign of concern for the former UFC title challenger but it was a takedown by Gustafsson and his ground game that controlled the majority of the round. The second round was halted briefly by an unintentional eye-poke to Manuwa. Upon the restart of the fight Gustafsson pushed Manuwa back towards the cage where he was able to secure a Thai clinch and land a knee that staggered Manuwa. The stunned Manuwa was then hit with a few punches that sent him to the ground.
Once there the fight was stopped and with that win Gustafsson gets closer to a rematch with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The official end of the fight came at the 1:18 mark.
Following the fight Gustafsson made it know that he wants a rematch. "Jon Jones, I want my title shot again," Gustafsson said after taking the mic from Dan Hardy who had post-fight interview duties for the event.
The previously undefeated Manuwa made a giant leap in competition that would have paid off enormously, however it did not happen. Manuwa moves to 14-1 in his MMA career and 3-1 in the UFC. Gustafsson moves to 16-2 overall and 8-2 in the UFC.
Jon Jones is set to fight Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 in April. During the post-fight press-conference, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Gustafsson would indeed face the winner of the Jones and Teixeira fight.
“If Jones wins, we have a nasty rematch,” White told the media. “If he doesn't, then it’s [Gustafsson] and Glover Teixeira.”
Gustafsson and Jones met at UFC 165 last September in what was the fight of the year for 2013. Jones won a unanimous decision that many felt Gustafsson won.
UFC Fight Night 37 aired live on the UFC Fight Pass.
